Cervical Discectomy

Find Relief from Neck Pain and Nerve Compression

At Barbour Orthopaedics & Spine, our experienced spine specialists offer advanced treatment options for patients suffering from chronic neck pain, arm pain, numbness, and weakness caused by damaged cervical discs. When conservative treatments fail to provide relief, a Cervical Discectomy may be recommended to relieve pressure on the nerves and help you return to the activities you love.

What Is a Cervical Discectomy?

A cervical discectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove all or part of a damaged or herniated disc in the neck (cervical spine). The goal of the procedure is to eliminate pressure on nearby spinal nerves or the spinal cord, reducing pain and restoring function.

The cervical spine consists of seven vertebrae separated by discs that act as cushions and shock absorbers. Over time, injury, arthritis, or degeneration can cause a disc to bulge or rupture, placing pressure on surrounding nerves.

Conditions Treated with Cervical Discectomy

A cervical discectomy may be recommended for patients suffering from:

  • Herniated cervical discs
  • Cervical radiculopathy (pinched nerve)
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Cervical spinal stenosis
  • Neck pain accompanied by arm pain, numbness, or weakness
  • Spinal cord compression (cervical myelopathy)

Common Symptoms

Patients who may benefit from a cervical discectomy often experience:

  • Persistent neck pain
  • Pain radiating into the shoulder, arm, or hand
  • Numbness or tingling in the arms or fingers
  • Muscle weakness in the upper extremities
  • Difficulty with fine motor skills
  • Loss of balance or coordination in severe cases
When Is Surgery Recommended?

Surgery is typically considered when conservative treatments have failed to provide adequate relief. These treatments may include:

  • Activity modification
  • Physical therapy
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Epidural steroid injections
  • Chiropractic care
  • Rest and lifestyle modifications

If symptoms persist, worsen, or neurological deficits develop, surgical intervention may provide lasting relief.

How Is a Cervical Discectomy Performed?

A cervical discectomy is typically performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure:

  1. A small incision is made in the front of the neck.
  2. The surgeon carefully accesses the cervical spine.
  3. The damaged disc material compressing the nerve is removed.
  4. Depending on the patient’s condition, the disc space may be reconstructed using a bone graft, spacer, or artificial disc.
  5. In many cases, a fusion procedure may be performed to stabilize the spine.

At Barbour Orthopaedics & Spine, our surgeons utilize advanced minimally invasive techniques whenever possible to minimize tissue disruption and promote faster recovery.

Benefits of Cervical Discectomy

Patients often experience significant improvements, including:

  • Relief of arm pain and nerve symptoms
  • Reduced neck pain
  • Improved strength and sensation
  • Restoration of daily function
  • Prevention of further nerve damage
  • Improved quality of life
Recovery After Surgery

Recovery times vary depending on the extent of surgery and individual patient factors. Most patients can expect:
